The 1998-1999 Heifer project is full. After concluding the past five year project, a new project through the Dickinson Research Extension Center was presented to past participants of the NDBCIA heifer project, according to Dr. Kris Ringwall, DREC Director.
Since the fall of 1993, the NDBCIA and the Dickinson Research Extension Center have been cooperating "to establish performance and financial benchmarks in development heifers". On September 29, the NDBCIA Board concluded the goals of the project had been met and voted to end the program, Ringwall announced.
The DREC had been conducting reproductive, nutritional and entomology research within the ongoing NDBCIA project. No new starting and ending dates were set. Heifers are due to be delivered to the DREC Manning Ranch between December 28-31, 1998. Producers are expected to pick up heifers on July 31, 1999. The cost of the program will be $240 plus semen and additional health expenses.
In the past, heifers spent one full year under the care and management of the DREC. Costs were documented and each heifer was guaranteed bred. Heifers were returned to their owners by Nov. 1.
